Born:  January 28,1935,  at Zhenjiang, China.

Education: B.Sc. in Mathmatics and Mechanics, Peking  University (1957).

Professional Employment:

• Professor of Geophysics, Institute of Geophysics, State Seismological Bureau (1987-).

• Associate  Professor,  Institute of Geophysics,  State Seismological Bureau (1978-1986).

• Research Fellow,  Institute of Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1958-1977).

Scientific Contributions:

• Proposed a theoretical base to estimate the transferring  coefficient  between strain energy of Earthquake and energy of seismic waves.

• Developed an approach and criteria based on the seismicity pattern, source parameters etc. to identify the precursory earthquake swarm and foreshock sequence from background  seismic activity.

• Introduced the Entropy concept into seismological research, proposed a method calculating the seismic information entropy, as a new index describing seismicity pattern quantitatively, and made discovery of  decrease of seismic entropy before large earthquakes.
