ASC2002 Training Course

ASC98 at Hyderabad included a pre-meeting International training Course on Seismic Monitoring, Data analysis and Exchange. The faculty consisted of scientists from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), the GeoForschungs Zentrum Potsdam (GFZ), Germany, the University of Bergen, Norway, Kinematrics SA, Switzerland and the India Meteorological Department.

The course was attended by 25 trainees (selected from amongst 70 applicants): India 8, China 6, Iran 3, Oman 2 and one each from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Yemen, Indonesia, Georgia and Zambia.

ASC2000 at Teheran included a pre-symposium International Regional Training Course on Seismology and Mitigation of Seismic Disasters, and two post-symposium technical workshops on Educating the Public about Earthquake Hazard and Risk and Seismic Networks and Site Selection. The Institute of Geophysics, Teheran University, sponsored the Training Course as well as the technical workshops.

Distinguished international seismologists from Asia, Europe, and America were invited to give lectures on the up-to-date development of modern seismology and physics of the Earth's interior. The lectures started with an overview of seismology and historical background. Then new methods to determine source parameters were discussed and followed by computer practices. New understanding of seismotectonic features, prediction studies, physics of the source, inversion methods, ground strong motion and the use of internet facilities were among the topics that were included in the course. There were more than 25 participants from Finland, India, Yemen, Russia and Iran.

A pre-Assembly Training Course on Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction for Cities is also being planned for ASC2002 at Nepal.
