The Asian Seismological Commission (ASC) with a geographical jurisdiction of all Asia and the South Pacific Region, including Australia and New Zealand, has been formed as a regional scientific commission affiliated to the IUGG/IASPEI for mutual consultation and exchange of information and expertise among Asian and South Pacific region countries.

The First Meeting of the ASC was held at Tangshan, China, 1-3 August 1996, during the IASPEI regional assembly there.

The Second Meeting of the ASC and (ASC98) was held at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, India, 1-3 December 1998. About 200 abstracts were received and the meeting was attended by about 150 delegates, including 70 participants from 26 countries outside of India.

The Third Meeting of the ASC and "Symposium on Seismology, Earthquake Hazard Assessment and Earth's Interior Related Topics" (ASC2000) was organized by the Institute of Geophysics, University of Teheran, from 25 September to 14 October 2000.  The ASC, IASPEI, IUGG, ICSU, UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education of Iran, the National Committee for Reduction of Natural Disasters in Iran, and the Scientific Research Council of Iran sponsored ASC2000. Topics on earthquake processes, precursors and forecasts; recent devastating earthquakes, strong ground motion, and seismic hazard; seismotectonics with special reference to western Asia; induced and triggered seismicity; heat flow, volcanology, lithosphere and structure of the Earth's interior; and recent trends in seismic instrumentation, data processing, GPS, public awareness and related topics, were included in the technical sessions. Over 300 abstracts were received, representing a wide spectrum of research subjects related to seismology and the physics of the Earth's Interior. There were more than 150 participants from 23 countries.

The Fourth  Asian Seismological Commission General Assembly (ASC2002) was held at Kathmandu, Nepal for three days during November-December 2002. The proposal for this meeting was submitted by Mr. Amod Mani Dixit, General Secretary of the National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET)-Nepal. The title of the Symposium to be held along with the General Assembly is "Symposium on Seismology, Earthquake Hazard Assessment and Earthquake Risk Management
