Report of the Third Meeting of

ASIAN SEISMOLOGICAL COMMISSION

and Symposium on

SEISMOLOGY, EARTHQUAKE HAZARD ASSESSMENT AND EARTH'S  INTERIOR RELATED TOPICS

Held in Tehran University, I. R. Iran

10-12 October 2000

The symposium was sponsored by Asian Seismological Commission; International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior; IUGG/ICSU/UNESCO; Ministry of Culture and Higher Education of Iran; National Committee for Reduction of natural Disasters in Iran, and Scientific Research Council of Iran. It was organized by the Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran. In the history of Asian Seismological Commission this was the third gathering for the scholars in the region. The symposium was an opportunity for the representatives from most of the Asian countries as well as from Africa, Europe, America, and Australia to offer the results of their scientific achievements in the field of Seismology, Earthquake Hazard Assessment Earth's Interior Related Topics.

In the opening ceremony of the symposium the first speaker was the interior Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran, which was followed by the speech of the chancellor of the University of Tehran. The participants also heard the addresses of the chairman of the local organizing committee of ASC, A. Javaherian; the president of ASC, Harsh K. Gupta; the Iranian representative in ASC, M.R. Gheitanchi; the secretary general of ASC, Zhu Chuanzhen; the director of the Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran, N. Kamalian; the secretary general of IASPEI, Bob Engdahl. The opening ceremony was followed by two special lectures delivered by distinguished scholars Bob Engdahl, U.S.A. and Gary Gibson, Australia. The working sessions of the symposium were held at the main campus in three parallel sessions

From 300 abstracts, which were directed to ASC2000, the conveners accepted 269 papers to be published in the six sessions of the abstract volume. Due to the time limit, about 80 papers were selected for oral presentations while the remaining were accepted for poster sessions. The papers focused on a wide spectrum of research subjects related to Seismology and the Earth's Interior. There were more than 150 participants from 23 countries. Following the working sessions of the symposium the participants attended exhibitions, poster presentations, visited the museums and attended the sightseeing's.

The closing ceremony was an opportunity to evaluate the symposium results. The conveners of the six sessions summarized the highlights of the products of their sessions. Balassanian, R. Armenia, entitled: "Educating the Public about Earthquake Hazard and Risk" and was mainly focused on peculiarities of public education in seismoactive zones. The second workshop was directed by A. Trancoczy, Slovenia, entitled: "Seismic Networks and Site Selection" which mainly concentrated on the proper design, installation and running of seismic networks.

There were two post-symposium trips: The first was a field trip to East-central Iran where eight major earthquakes occurred in the last three decades. The second was a sightseeing tour to Shiraz, to visit the historical monuments and the museums.
