Welcome to the Asian Seismological Commission

VI General Assembly

Dear Colleagues and Friends :

Asia-Pacific region has suffered from earthquake disasters for a long time. Seismological study plays an important role in the sustainable development of economy and society in this region. Characterized by its diversity of regional geology and unique tectonic features - continental collision zone, subduction zone, intra-plate seismicity, and tsunami-generated earthquakes, among others, Asia-Pacific region is also one of the hot spots not only in global seismology but also in a board perspective of Earth science.

Asian Seismological Commission (ASC), a commission established in 1996, aims to promote the seismological study and international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Within the framework of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI), ASC has been playing an increasingly active role in the regional, international exchange and cooperation since its founding, as marked by its Assemblies in Tangshan (1996), Hyderabad (1998), Tehran (2000), Kathmandu (2002), Yerevan (2004), and this Assembly in Bangkok, its pre-Assembly training courses since 1998, its joint working group with the IASPEI Commission on Earthquake Hazard, Risk, and Strong Ground Motion (SHR) , its Working Group on Earthquake Prediction , and its pilot project on the seismic risk in Asia-Pacific region.

Focusing on the scientific problems of subduction zone and tsunami, strong motion and earthquake hazard, earthquake forecast and prediction, management and reduction of seismic risk, and observational seismology, the ASC 2006 Assembly tries to bring seismologists together to exchange the current seismological studies, to foster international cooperation, to communicate with policy makers, news media, and public for the preparedness of earthquake disasters, and to discuss the future opportunity and challenge of Asian seismology. The importance of this meeting is also highlighted by the 30th anniversary of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, the 2 year anniversary of the Sumatra earthquake and the Indian Ocean tsunami, the 1 year anniversary of the disastrous Kashmir earthquake. Disasters caused by these earthquakes remind seismologists of their responsibilities for the seismic safety of the society. The ultimate way for the reduction of earthquake disasters is the development of earthquake science which will lead to better understandings of earthquake preparation, earthquake rupture, seismic wave propagation, strong ground motion, and ripple effects of earthquake.

It will be a pleasure to dedicate this abstract volume to the 10th Anniversary of Asian Seismological Commission. Acknowledging the critical contributions from the Scientific Steering Committee, the Local Organization Committee, the convenors of all the sessions, and especially all the participants from different countries/regions, and acknowledging with gratitude the support from the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), IASPEI, the co-sponsors of this Assembly, and especially the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD),the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC). I hope that this meeting will be acting as a new start of our Asian Seismological Commission (ASC) as well as Asian seismology.
